You start work Monday morning hopeful to mark a few things off your to-do list. Before you can even finish your first cup of caffeinated beverage, you’re getting pinged, and your inbox is filling with alerts. Hoping into your database monitoring tools, it’s clear that the production database is on fire. After a half hour of troubleshooting, you find that at least one query has changed execution plan, for the worse. How did this happen?

There is a good chance that Oracle’s adaptive SQL optimization features caused the query plan to change. In this session we will walk through how these features work, why they exist, and how you might be hindering them. Instead of fighting the Optimizer, we will discuss what is needed to make it successful. Oracle Database performance tuning is most effective when DBAs follow a clear methodology: diagnose, tune, and validate. This session introduces the fundamentals of Oracle Database performance tuning, including DB time, waits, AWR, ASH, ADDM, SQL tuning, and validation techniques. It also discusses how Oracle tools such as Enterprise Manager, Database Management, Performance Hub, and Ops Insights can support this methodology across modern database environments.

The session will highlight newer diagnostics capabilities such as AWR Explorer, SQL History, ADDM Spotlight enhancements, and AWR support for Active Data Guard workloads. We will also explore how AI is changing performance diagnostics through capabilities such as AWR.ai and SQL Perf.ai, including GenAI-powered natural language interaction, intelligent analysis, LLM-driven summarization, and agentic workflows that can help reduce time to root cause and simplify performance tuning.
